OLYMPICS IN BANSKO...
IOC and EU will allot 4 billion euros if we host the Olympics
1.5 million foreign viewers, 2 500 sportsmen, 10 000 official guests and 10 000 journalists will pour into our capital if the nomination is successful.
Moreover, Sofia will host the winter Para-Olympic Games in March 2014, which will bring more viewers and sportsmen to Bulgaria.
84 titles and 246 medals in 15 winter sports disciplines will be awarded at the Sofia Olympics.
“Sofia has a big chance to win the nomination to host the 2014 Olympics, especially after the insistent invitation from Jacques Rogge, president of IOC, to bid for the Olympics,” explains Bulgarian Minister for Sports Vassil Ivanov.
According to him the things we have to complete by 2007 are the new Sofia airport and the motorway from Sofia to Kulata with a detour to Bansko.
“Many sponsors and the Bulgarian pools, which have been registering record jackpots in the recent years, will help to prepare for the Olympics,” explains Vassil Ivanov. “20 000 volunteers will also take part.”
Sofia citizens will take advantage of the new youth hostels, new public transport vehicles and repaired streets after the games are over. The Minister guarantees that the Olympic projects will not harm Bulgarian mountains or the ecology of the capital.
The IOC had been worried that there were no nominees, therefore last week they sent us a written invitation to bid for the Olympics. The decision of the government to do so coincided with the International Day of Olympic Games. Students from the National Sports Academy organized a relay-race and passed on the torch to Stefka Kostadinova in front of the Sports Ministry.
Bulgaria has won 5 medals in its history of Winter Olympic Games participation – two in biathlon, one in Nordic combined and two in short track. Two of the winter Olympic sports have not been practiced in Bulgaria at all. These are the speed skating and freestyle skiing.
The most expensive equipment is the chute for bobsleigh, skeleton and luge amounting to over 20 million euros. There has not been a single jumping track since the destruction of the artificial one at Chernia Kos. The new one will probably be constructed there again if we are to host the Olympics.
The decision for that will be made in 2007.
“Four billion euros will be invested in Sofia by EU and IOC,” says the Sports Director of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee Pavel Shturbanov. A net profit of at least 1 billion euros is expected. No later than next week the work group on the nomination with members Minister Vassil Ivanov, Pavel Shturbanov and Sofia Mayor Stephan Sofianski will have a session.

“What do you think of Bansko and the ski runs at the resort?”
“Here I feel like I am at an European elite resort. You have excellent ski runs. I can see that you keep them up very professionally. My expectations are that Bansko hosts a start for the World Cup by 2010.”
“What is the reason for racing here?”
“The person at the bottom of it is your nationals’ ski coach Ivan Kovachev. During the World Championship in Bormio he came to me with a prospect of Bansko and invited me. I needed just a few minutes to accept the invitation. Now I am glad that I did not make a mistake in doing so.”
